Richard was born and raised in New York. He left the city for college, attending Purdue where he got a PHD in Biotechnological engineering and was given a job at the New York Academy of Sciences. In his time researching for the university he helped develop biosensors and worked on improving the "Bunker Buster" bomb created during WWII. At the time of the fall, he had been on assignment, in the New York NASA facility, working for the Government on reducing the 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-para-dioxin's in Agent Orange, Agent Purple, and Agent Red (used in the Vietnam War on crops). He was in the lab when the news of people dying in the streets first spread. Having an unpronounced faith in the government that paid his salary, he did as he was told and remained in the lab, awaiting further instructions. After several hours of hearing only information through the grapevine, he attempted to call out on the lab phone, however, all the lines were engaged. He left the lab, and was attempting to leave the facilities to find out what was going on when the building went into automatic lockdown. Around him people were dying in the building – though whether it was a chemical agent sent out by the building's security sensors, or if it was the same illness effecting everyone on the streets he had no idea. After (frantically) checking all the exits, he came to understand that he was locked in – his mind began to weaken – unable to cope with the knowledge that the government he had so willingly and happily worked under for nearly thirty years would betray him, his mind began to fracture, bend. A panic set in, and without realizing he was doing it, he lifted a chair from the facility's lobby and smashed it against the window—which cracked, but did not shatter – still in a mindless frenzy, Richard brought the steel chair against the window and managed to break through, climbing out into the mad streets.
